Calculating God
I started this book over my coffee this morning and proceeded to utterly devour it, pausing only to do some packing and eat dinner. I just finished it a few minutes ago.
It’s not an instant classic, but it’s an asskicking blend of CS Lewis and Arthur C. Clarke. Aliens land in Toronto and say “Take me to your paleontologist” — turns out they’re investigating a weird coincidence related to mass extinctions among intelligent races. The story then expands into a full-on case for the intelligent-design theory of the Universe’s origins, attempting to harmonize it with the theory of evolution.
Ambitious, funny, grandiose, and touching all at the same time. Plus it has all kinds of Canadian in-jokes that are too much for my fragile little mind.
