Anime n’ Dhaba

robin.jpg Had several friends over tonight for Anime n’ Dhaba — cheap Indian food and Japanese cartoons are not a bad combination. Especially when you add in sangria de cava and Alison’s amazing papaya lassi.

I put on FLCL, Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, and Witch Hunter Robin. I think FLCL was a mistake, since most of the people there don’t watch enough anime to really appreciate it (let’s face it: it’s pretty fuckin’ weird). Guu, as much as I love it, was also not quite a hit, although the brain-hurty bizarreness of it was appreciated. People seemed to really like WHR though, for which I’m glad. We went through four episodes of it, even though I was planning to stop after two hours.

Whether the audience was merely clinging for dear life onto WHR’s comprehensible plot and characters after the insanity of the previous two series remains to be seen. I think I’ll do another one of these. Perhaps a potluck? :)

Last Exile

I’ve been enjoying Last Exile quite a bit. It’s a rich, steampunk fantasy with a lot of eye candy (they don’t shy away from using CG for characters and atmosphere), and seems to actually have a plot. The score is no Yoko Kanno, but the opening theme song and generally trancy stuff on the soundtrack isn’t bad. It’s definitely worth the download.
