I bet that there’s some kind of awkward tone to every weblog’s first entries — the blogger trying to fit what he or she thinks is the right “style” of blogging. Can’t say I’m sure though, since I’m about two years behind on the trend and only read a few of ‘em.
So, feel the awkward, baby!
Why this site exists:
- I need to work on my writing. It’s withered away over the past few months, along with my social abilities, my hygiene and my sanity (working from home is the best).
- I’m sick of goddamn poetry (I have a bachelor’s degree in it, and I’ve been reading and workshopping it for over ten years) and I don’t enjoy writing fiction (if I wanted to create little pretend lives in my head, I’d get Barbie and Ken). A blogjournal seemed a good place to go next, since it gives me new toys to play with (hence my avoidance of Livejournal, Blogspot et al). Besides, there can’t possibly be more wankers in the Blogosphere than there are writing horrible, horrible blank verse about childhood molestation or road trips or their vaginas down at the co-op. A brief, harrowing tour of duty seriously writing poetry will enable you to handle anything, including drinking bleach and listening to NPR.
- I can’t ever remember myself the way I was — looking at old photos or going through old letters (even from two years ago) is the same as reading a history book. So, I need a history — not a journal of my life, but a record of who I was, and where I wanted to be.
- I Have So Much To Share With You All.

Damn, Matt, I didn’t know you were a poet.

Well, saying you’re a poet is kinda like saying Latin is your native language. You can pretend all you want, but it’s pretty much a dead form. Poetry clings to some life as spoken word and slam, but then I don’t have the rhythm or nimble tongue to really accomplish much.
That said, I think poetry can be pretty interesting as folk art (it’s a very democratic form of expression, accessible to a lot of people). So in the sense that anybody can write poetry if they read a bit and try hard enough, I’m a poet.
