Yesterday, Alison and I went down the street to a neighbor’s house to meet Somerville mayoral candidate Tony Lafuente (his website is going up “this week” he claimed). It was a fantastic two hours, spent in a living room with just half a dozen people, grilling Lafuente and learning about the dirty ins and outs of our new town.

Lafuente is charismatic, iconoclastic (like pretty much every American politician claims to be), and whip-smart. He’s never held political office, although he’s had his fingers in a lot of committees and is on the Chamber of Commerce. I think I like him, although I’ll reserve judgement until I read more of his position papers. He’s a fiscally conservative businessman, but as a Portuguese immigrant he’s fairly in-touch with the city’s underclass (meeting with gang members, targeting the city’s egregious tithes on the poor, opposing big-box store development, etc.). He’s also very aggressive about public transit, claiming he’ll push for extensions of the Green line past Union Square and getting the commuter rail up here.

I’ll post a link to his site when I find it.
